York Disabled Workers Co-op is a company for disabled workers run by disabled workers. Our mission is to provide high standards of employment and offer pay above the national minimum wage. We are run by a board of non paid members who are all workers in the business and we are supported by trade unions, social enterprises, voluntary groups and individuals.
What’s different about us?
We care about the environment, therefore we try use only recycled materials. The vast majority of the timber and hardwood that we use is normally off cuts that are thrown away by other manufacturers, or is wood that is donated to us, we collect their donations of wood waste and make our beautiful products. There is nothing we cannot use! Even some of the screws used in our products have been recycled, and we only ever use environmentally friendly non-toxic stains.
We care about our workers, they are the lifeblood of what we do and the reason we want to do what we do. We want to prove that having a disability doesn’t always make you disabled to work and that a skill is the same no matter who you are, as we hope the quality of the products we produce shows. All our profits go back into the company so we can expand and take on more new workers to give them a chance to prove to themselves and the outside world what they can do.
We care about the Products we make, all our products are finished to a high quality and our production process itself generates very little waste. We believe that our hand built and crafted products will be a talking and centre point for any home or garden. All our workers take their time to ensure that everything they make, from the smallest cup mat to the largest picnic table or more has the added bonus of their love for the beauty of the natural wood we use.
We are currently exploring and planning a new venture for 2014 that involves investing in a machine to turn our saw dust and wood chips into high quality wooden brickets for burning. Helping the environment and making sure that we keep to our core beliefs.
By buying our products you not only support the employment of disabled people but help the environment, we think that’s called a Win Win, don’t you??.
“I can personally vouch for the quality of the products” Paul Kenny, GMB General Secretary
